- Never, ever leave home without healthy food options. I always carry a cooler with me, even if I think I’m just running a quick errand. You never know when you are going to get “caught up” and not get home in time to eat. Poor food choices get made when you’re hungry and not at home.
- Never, ever sit down in front of the TV hungry. My husband claims that I have “fast food commercial rage”. LOL! You wouldn’t believe how many food commercials there are until you cannot eat the food they’re advertising. If you are hungry, it is best to find another way to relax. Read a good book, take a bath, play a board game with your family, go for a walk, take a class, etc… If you must sit in front of the TV, Tivo it so that you can fast-forward through the commercials.
- Remember food is fuel, nothing more. Food really is only fuel. Change the way you think about food. Food is not for pleasure; food is fuel. If you currently derive pleasure from food, find something else that you enjoy and do that instead of seeking pleasure out of the food you eat.
- Food is fuel; it won’t always be tasty and warm. Get used to eating your food cold, out of baggies, and without a lot of flavor. Again, food is fuel.
- Whether you’re a competitor or just a person seeking to lose weight, dieting is your choice, and your family/friends should not have to pay the price. To diet like a competitor means you have to not only be physically strong, but also mentally and emotionally strong. It is not your family’s fault you’re experiencing cravings or are hungry; do not take it out on them.
- Eating like a competitor can make others feel bad, don’t take their behavior personally. One of the hardest parts of being a competitor, or eating like one, is the way that people react to your diet in social situations. Some people will be downright offended that you brought your own food to their party. Others will make excuses about why they don’t eat clean or will cut you down. Even though it feels very personal, people respond the way they do because eating the way a competitor eats makes some people feel badly about themselves. Try your hardest to let these comments and behaviors roll off your back; easier said than done. I know!
